The Experience

Do you want to make an audience think, feel, and/or act differently?

Do you have a message you want to bring to the world?

Are you a leader that would like to move people deeply?

Or maybe you are a founder who would love to be able to tell a compelling story.

Whether you are looking to raise capital, move an audience deeply, or conduct a toast at a family gathering, your ability to use words in a compelling way makes all the difference. We are all speakers and we all use words to influence, advise, inspire, and lead, whether at home, in the workplace, or in sports.

BraveSpeaker will bring together a small group of individuals committed to honing their message, sharpening their presentation skills, and developing their abilities to move an audience mentally and emotionally.

A combination of learning and doing will see participants explore the techniques and craft of presentation, while also “getting up on their feet” to practice and explore new ways of delivering their message.

The event promises three days of learning, laughing, listening, leading, and launching.

The Work

Over the course of three days, Philip McKernan and Joey Coleman will share lessons learned, mistakes made, and insights gained from their combined 55+ years of giving speeches to audiences on all seven continents.

Brave Speaker is an opportunity to take time out from your day-to-day and invest in your speaking skills and talents. In our time together we will focus on identifying, honing, and delivering your most important messages. Some of the topics to be covered include:

  • Why do you want to speak?
  • Who do you want to speak to?
  • What do you want to say?
  • How are you going to say it?

For those interested in specific elements of the speaking process, we plan to discuss/cover:

  • how to go deeper/have a more courageous conversation with your audience
  • the different structures and formats of speeches
  • getting clear on your message and desired takeaways
  • outlining, researching, and developing your presentation
  • to use (or not use) slides and if you do, how to design them in the most effective way
  • investigating your audience
  • stagecraft and performance
  • vocal performance and maintenance
  • reading the room “in the moment”
  • the “business” of speaking (contracts, marketing, etc.)
  • speaking fees (did you know beginner speakers can earn up to  $5,000 per speech and professionals more than $25,000?)
  • connecting with your audience before, during, and after your presentation

Brave Speaker offers an intentional and safe environment to explore new topics and messages, ask wonderful questions, learn new skills and techniques, and imagine the possibilities ahead.

At Brave Speaker You Can:

  • Explore new topics and messages in a safe, supportive environment.
  • Gain a greater understanding of your voice and how you communicate.
  • Experiment with new performance skills and techniques.
  • Learn how to move a room with stories, voice, presence, and vulnerability.
  • Explore different ways to “hold the room.”
  • Harness your inner voice and showcase it to a broader audience.
  • Refine technical presentation skills involving slides, clickers, lighting, sound, etc.

Joey and Philip will share their experiences and techniques for delivering world-class speeches that move audiences to think, feel, and act differently.

Additionally, we will host several “Ask Us Anything” sessions to explore any topic related to speaking/presenting that is of interest to you.

FAQS

What if I don’t know what I want to speak about - I just know I want to give speeches?

Every speech is different. Every audience is different. Every speaker is different. What separates the amateurs from the professionals is a commitment to constant improvement and refinement - based not only on the evolution of the content/message, but also on the increasing familiarity with the audience, the different styles of speaking, and the personal growth and development of the person delivering the speech. We are committed to helping you find your message, strengthen your voice, and adapt your delivery techniques to a variety of different venues and audiences.

What if my speech is still a work in progress?

After giving thousands of speeches, it’s fair to say that every speech is still a work in progress! There is always room for improvement and opportunities to customize a presentation to a specific audience, venue, or time period.

This experience is designed to not only teach you new ways for presenting your information but also to help you evolve and refine your content/message. If you have a current “talk” you enjoy giving, we will help you to explore new avenues and approaches for delivery. If your talk is still a “work in progress” we will help you narrow the field and create a framework for a full and complete speech.

What is included?

  • The program delivered by Philip McKernan and Joey Coleman
  • All experiences and materials (including a master resource guide with sample speaker contracts, introductions, and other “tools” a speaker should have ready at a moment’s notice)
  • Two virtual integration sessions following the experience (approximately 30 and 60 days after the event)

This experience is for you if:

  • You have given speeches before and want to polish your performance skills.
  • You have never given a speech before but are compelled to share your message/viewpoint/experience with the world.
  • You currently are a paid speaker at events/conferences or aspire to do this in the future.
  • You are a leader, owner, or entrepreneur who regularly facilitates meetings and expresses a vision for your team/people/customers.
  • You want to go deeper in your conversations with audiences to cover new topics, perspectives, or feelings.
  • You have an upcoming speech that you desire to deliver in a memorable fashion.
  • You are open and coachable.
  • You want to participate and “play full out.”

Will I get to work directly with Joey and Philip?

In an effort to maximize the opportunities for focused, personal work, and one-on-one interaction with both Philip and Joey, we are keeping the event intimate. We want the event to have an intentional, immersive, individual feel and believe that a smaller number of participants will make it possible for everyone to get personalized feedback.

What is the investment?

The investment is $7,500 and includes full participation in all event activities, useful templates and support documents (e.g., speaker contract, sample introductions), selected meals, snacks/refreshments during the sessions, and two virtual implementation/integration sessions after the event (approximately 30 and 60 days later).

Where will I stay?

We will send you room booking details as part of your preparation information when you secure your spot.

How will I get there?

St. Augustine is located approximately one hour from Jacksonville International Airport and 2 hours from Orlando International Airport. These airports offer a host of direct flights to locations throughout North America and Europe. There are numerous options for getting from the airport to the location and we are happy to assist you with coordinating transfer logistics (car service) if you desire. You can also easily take an Uber/Lyft or bus directly from the airport to St. Augustine.

What is the itinerary?

We begin on Sunday, January 28th, late afternoon, and depart on Wednesday, January 31st, 2024. We will finish our session at approximately 4:30 pm to allow people to take a flight out that night if desired, although we would encourage you to consider spending the evening to allow yourself to process and decompress a bit from the experience.

Is there any pre-work?

We will ask you to complete a short questionnaire in advance of the experience. It should take no more than 15-20 mins to complete and will come to you via email after you sign up for the program.

Note: if you are a seasoned speaker with a keynote or workshop presentation, we may ask you to bring/share a typical slide deck and/or any materials you use in your current presentation so we can be better prepared to support you during the event.

Reviews

Throughout our careers, we’ve found that we learn best from people that have “been there, done that, got the t-shirt.” As such, we feel confident that our collective presentations on stages around the world will give us the context and experience to guide you on this journey.

But don’t just take our word for it… Here are some selected testimonials from people that have been in the audience when we’ve presented:

“I learned so many incredible nuggets from Joey & Philip at Brave Speaker, many of which I have already successfully implemented into my keynote presentations with great results. And the side benefit of Brave Speaker, that I had not anticipated, was how quickly our group of speakers bonded together as we shared openly and vulnerably with each other. We laughed, cried and learned together in an incredibly supportive, collaborative way. I would highly recommend the Brave Speaker experience if you’re looking to step up your game on stage!”
